I have a U6 with a PS12DC attached through P1, using the FIO0-7 digital outs to control the PS12DC. Is there any reason that it would not be a good idea to drive external LEDs from the same digital outputs that drive the PS12DC?

The IO are driving opto-couplers. By loading in parallel we might prevent the LEDs in the couplers from working. It would be safer to buffer the signal from the IO before using it to power additional LEDs.
